What form my services take depends on your own educational needs and questions. Typically I spend 2-5 hours in person with a client helping them to understand the basics of investing, covering such topics as:

  • What is a stock/bond/mutual fund?
  • What are mutual fund fees?
  • What is a reasonable assumption for investment returns?
  • How do I estimate how much money I will need?
  • What is passive investing?
  • What is diversification?
  • How do I buy a mutual fund on my own?
  • What kinds of processes and behaviours can I set myself up with for success?

I can also help in less-intensive ways, like simply being available for you via instant messaging to answer questions while a you set up a self-directed brokerage account and make your first trade, or to answer a few questions by email.

There are many options available to suit your needs. I charge purely based on my time at a rate of $90/hr (no additional HST), so you can arrange to pay for as much or as little assistance as you need.

Please note that I have condensed much of what I typically cover with clients into my book The Value of Simple and am more than happy if that is able to help you answer all of your questions!

Feel free to contact me at any time to discuss your needs at invest@therobertsons.net.
